Here Porter refers to Crisp's casting as an attempt to thrust viewers into the question of sexual and gender ambiguities.

In these notes Sally Porter provides a synopsis of the book, and thus one can assume the elements of the book she deemed most important and therefore paramount to include into her adaptation. Interestingly it mention the androgynous nature of Shelmerdine, which is not as overt in the film as in the book.
